The first season of La Défense Lincoln, released online by Netflix in the summer of 2022, was a big hit for the streaming giant. Evidence, if any, that courtroom series continue to grow when the script is well-crafted, of course.
We meet Michael Haller – nicknamed “Lincoln’s Lawyer” – in Los Angeles after taking a career break to regain control after an addiction to painkillers. A golden opportunity comes his way when a murdered lawyer bequeaths him his firm and his entire clientele, including a high-profile case involving a celebrity accused of murdering his wife and her lover.
A story that could have been taken from the news, but isn’t. In fact, The Lincoln Defense is an adaptation of the literary saga written by Michael Connelly, which has already been made into a Hollywood film by Matthew McConaughey in 2011. The American author published 6 novels in this series, which were released between 2006 and 2021.
Therefore, the screenwriters of La Défense Lincoln have a lot to do to save their work. They decided not to follow the chronological order of the novels. Thus, the 2nd season, released a few days ago on Netflix, adapts the 4th opus of the literary saga, called The Fifth Witness (2013).
In Season 2, which was split into two parts, Mickey must defend Lisa Trammell (Lana Parrilla), a chef accused of murdering a real estate developer who is threatening to destroy her restaurant. While the series chronicles the gentrification of working-class neighborhoods, Connelly set his novel in the midst of the subprime crisis in the United States.
Lincoln’s Defense Season 2, Episode 2 premieres August 3rd on Netflix.
