Corinthians aim for a winning streak that hasn’t happened for two years

Manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo started July under pressure and with the possibility of being sacked, but managed a rare winning streak at Corinthians. And, this Tuesday (18th), against Universitario, from Peru, the coach can reach a milestone that hasn’t happened for two years.

After all, if Timão beats the Peruvian team, away from home, they will reach their fourth consecutive victory. The last time Corinthians managed to resume such a sequence happened in 2021, when the coach was Vagner Mancini. In the occasion, Alvinegro defeated Ponte Preta, São Caetano and Mirassol, in Paulistão, and Salgueiro, in Copa do Brasil.

In the current sequence, Corinthians beat Atlético-MG, away from home, for the Brazilian championship, Universitário itself, at the Neo Química Arena, for the first match of the playoffs Sul-Americana and América-MG, for the match second leg of the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil.

Vitória can put Corinthians in the right direction

Furthermore, a new victory would be useful to put Corinthians back on track for the season. Until now, Timão fell prematurely from Paulistão and Libertadores and is still fighting against relegation to the Brazilian league. However, the last few games have given hope to the coach, who believes in a sequence to change the club’s guidelines for the year.

Thus, the team from Parque São Jorge faces Universitário with the 1-0 advantage built in Itaquera. A simple draw qualifies Timão for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana.
