Among all the elements that are regularly repeated in the cinema of Christopher Nolan, of course, the detective genre and thriller, or even such themes as time and manipulation, are expressed. Without forgetting science, which is expressed in different ways.
For example, it’s hard to miss him in Interstellar , which revolves around quantum physics and black holes, two terms we find today in Oppenheimer, the filmmaker’s latest feature film. A film that came out three years after Tenet, in which science also played an important role and where the name of the creator of the atomic bomb was mentioned.
in the given interview Movie teaserThe director suggests that this was not an Easter egg on the subject of his next opus. But with this answer in mind (and thanks to a book suggested by Robert Pattinson), J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life and work.
Still, science plays an important role in his cinematography, including when it comes to making Batman’s gadgets in his Dark Knight trilogy look realistic. And we asked him about the reasons for this fascination while in Paris.
This is the most radical way of looking at our world
“Science is very fruitful in terms of drama – at least as I use it in my films, it develops the relationship between scientists and the public.”– says Christopher Nolan. “Science allows us to see our world in a different way. Especially when we approach quantum physics, which we clearly find in Interstellar, to some extent in Tenet, and a lot in Oppenheimer.”
“This is the most radical way of looking at our world. And in the case of Oppenheimer himself, this is a person who will look at the dull matter around us and see the energy in it, objects that generate waves of energy. This is a very different view. The world as a magician, Wizard or Jedi Knight (laughs).
“I really enjoyed incorporating real science into this film and seeing how these people changed the way the world was presented. There’s something very dramatic about it.” In Oppenheimer, this element appears among the superlatives.
Fiction and Science
Christopher Nolan revealed last May Entertainment Weekly I entrusted the roles of extras to real scientists: “We needed to react and improvise, and they gave us very specific speeches in the moment. It was a lot of fun to listen to them.”
All in the service of another of Christopher Nolan’s obsessions: realism. Which is shown once again in the feature film, which can be seen from July 19 and in which we meet Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh or Matt Damon.
