Oil companies to invest BRL 21 billion in exploration in country up to 2027, says ANP

Of the total resources for the activity, 29% are planned for this year, the agency said

RIO – The National Agency for Petrolium, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) reported that, by 2027, the oil companies operating in the country will invest 21 billion reais in the exploration phase alone, a step that precedes production. Of this total, according to the ANP, BRL 5.6 billion (29%) is expected to occur in 2023 and BRL 7 billion (34%) in 2024.

The information was presented this Wednesday during the presentation of the “Annual Exploration Report 2022 – Diagnosis and Outlook for Oil and Natural Gas Exploration in Brazil”. According to the document, the number of discovery notifications in Brazil increased by about 54% last year compared to the year 2021. In 2022, there were 20 notifications, compared to 13 the previous year.

There was also a slight increase in the number of wells drilled in 2022 compared to the previous year. There were 22 wells in 2021 and 23 wells in 2022, showing that the sector is still recovering from the covid-19 pandemic, the agency highlighted.

At the end of 2022, 295 blocks had been tendered, a total that represented a 19% increase over 2021, breaking the downward trend observed since 2019. This equates to over 186,000 square kilometers (m²) of block exploration basins.

Also according to the report, of the 295 blocks with ongoing contracts, 246 were active and 49 suspended, i.e. about 17% of the contracts were suspended. In most of these contracts, the suspension was due to the delay in the environmental permitting process, the ANP informed.

“Securing the increase of exploration activities in Brazil guarantees the country’s energy security, as well as maintaining jobs, income and government shares in Brazilian society. In 2022 alone, the PNA distributed around R$ 130 billion in royalties , special odds and signing bonuses The general director of the PNA, Rodolfo Saboia, said this during the event.
