Margot Robbie bet on $ 1 billion profit for ‘Barbie’: ‘Maybe I overreacted’

According to Warner, ‘Barbie’ has the studio’s highest pre-sales in Brazil

Margot Robbie said in meetings for negotiations of Barbie that the film could earn around US$ 1 billion, according to the collider (via Variety). The actress is also a producer of Greta Gerwig’s feature film and needed to convince a studio that Barbie it would be a good undertaking. And it worked.

My argument in the final meeting was that studios thrive when they are brave enough to embrace an idea from a visionary female director. […] And then I gave a series of examples, such as ‘dinosaurs and Spielberg’ – basically naming anything that was awesome and made studios tons of money over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you have Barbie It is Greta Gerwig‘. And I think I said the movie would make a billion dollars, which maybe I was exaggerating, but we had a movie to make, okay? – Margot Robbie

According to the Warner, Barbie has the biggest pre-sales in the history of the studio in Brazil. The company did not specify, however, how many tickets were sold for today’s premiere. Crowded movie theaters and competitive tickets corroborate the information. The expectation is for a profit between US$ 95 and US$ 110 million in the debut in the United States.

A Mattela toy brand owned by Barbie, also predicts a profit that will change the company’s landscape. The manufacturer posted net income of US$ 16.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2022, a drop of 93% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the Economic value.

In addition to the film itself, the Mattel earns by licensing branded products, as did HERE. In 2022, the profit was US$ 394 million, but that number is expected to reach US$ 950 million this year.
