Harry Potter: ‘Not Really an Actor’, What Alan Rickman Really Thought of Daniel Radcliffe

British actor Alan Rickman’s family released his memoirs in 2022, titled Madly Deep: The Alan Rickman Diaries. A large part of these writings is devoted to the filming of the Harry Potter films, in which he played the character of Severus Snape, a wizard who was not very talkative and quite aggressive towards the hero.

However, this unsympathetic role had more depth than during the saga, which spanned eight feature films. During the first films of the saga, Rickman was not very happy, and in his diary we find his thoughts about this moment, and he was not gentle with the young actors, in particular, Daniel Radcliffe, Harry’s interpreter:

“I still think he’s not really an actor, but he’ll definitely be a producer/director”. He also describes Radcliffe as “Sensitive, intelligent and well-spoken”. Emma Watson, on the other hand, takes her title because Rickman writes that her diction is “next to the mark”.

If Radcliffe becomes an actor again, Rickman was not mistaken about the fact that the young man would become a financier, because he is now an executive producer of his series Miracle Workers and the documentary Circus Kid, which is devoted to family dynamics. The world, the world of the circus.

On the set of Prisoner of Azkaban, he adds: “These kids need to be addressed, they don’t know their text.”

Rickman has never been kind to the saga, which helped endear him to new audiences who didn’t necessarily know him as a Shakespearean actor or as a Crystal Trap villain. At the after-party for The Half-Blood Prince screening, he writes:

The desire to eat and drink is like the need to bang the heads of three Davids against the nearest wall. I understand the character development and the amazing (and impressive) special effects, but where is the story??.

The phrase “Three Davids” includes David Heyman and David Baron, producers of Harry Potter, and David Yates, director of films from Order of the Phoenix to Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Yates is still “Potter” today. Studio Warner director, as he signed the three Fantastic Beasts opus that are part of the saga.

Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint

Despite these unkind words for the saga, which he almost left several times, including the first time after Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Alan Rickman finally realized that it was the narrative of his character Severus Snape that connected him. Project:

“It was a real rite of passage, a bit of information given to me by Jo Rowling seven years ago – Snape loves Lily – that gave me a rock.
