Benchmarks were done by MSI and they showed that the 8GB variant can do better for $100 less
After the quiet launch of the 16GB GeForce RTX 4060 Ti last Tuesday (18th), the MSI official channel decided to test the card against the 8GB variant in a livestream. The result wasn’t surprising, as the GPU with more memory performed worse, as expected.

The tests were conducted on the MSI Insider Weekly program, available at Youtube until a few hours ago, but it was private from the company. The reason is that the Nvidia he must have been less than satisfied with the results – or lack thereof.
The presenters tested popular titles at the highest quality, such as cyberpunk 2077, Rainbow Six: Siege AND Formula 1 2023, and in all of these games the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti outperformed the 16GB. Already inside fortnite AND Hogwarts Legacy the performance was even. The only scenario where the card with the most VRAM was won CS:GO.

The TGP and the bus could be to blame
The reason for this dismal performance is uncertain. However, both versions of the card have the extension same technical specifications. Aside from the amount of VRAM, the TGP (Total Graphics Power) varies between 160W for the model with the least memory and 165W for the other.
This could theoretically explain that the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is “limited” by lack of power, and that amount of watts wouldn’t be enough for the VRAM to work properly.
Another plausible explanation would involve the memory interface. These models are only 128-bit, but NVIDIA itself has already released a RTX 3060Ti previously with a 256-bit bus, supporting 8 or 16 GB of VRAM. Therefore, it’s hard to understand why the 16GB model uses the same 128-bit.
The situation is more complicated for the company as no test units have been sent to any type of media worldwide. Specialized sites and channels had to buy their own versions to run the benchmarks.
With an MSRP of $399 for the 8GB version, the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti costs $499 overseas. In Brazil, the 8 GB model can already be purchased for R$ 2,999. Eventually, users will end up buying a card that costs 25% more than its variant and is unable to offer even 1% difference.
