On October 7, 1998, the American channel WB launched Charmed, a new genre fantasy series centered on the Halliwell sisters, Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Shannen Doherty were camping when they discovered they were. Descendants of a powerful family of wizards.
Over the course of 8 seasons, viewers saw them learn to master the power of the three to fight evil and demons who wanted to destroy them in order to gain their power.
A turbulent start
If the series, created by Constance M. Burge and produced by Aaron Spelling, quickly generated public enthusiasm, it was not exempt from its share of scandals. Of course, the most famous was the dismissal of Shannen Doherty, aka Prue Halliwell, at the end of the third season.
A tumultuous start that would result in tension between the actor and his co-star Alyssa Milano. At the time, Shannon Doherty confided in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that she left the series because she was “Too much drama on set and not enough passion for work. You know, I’m 30 years old and I don’t have time in my life for such stories..”
Why did Prue disappear from the show entirely?
While Prue’s death in the Season 3 finale of Charmed left many fans devastated, the loss of one of their favorite characters wasn’t the only reason they were upset.
Most experienced viewers would have noticed that after Prue’s death, all traces of the character disappeared from the series. The iconic photo of the three sisters in front of the palace, which was always prominent in the previous seasons, evaporated from the series.
Shannen Doherty also never appeared in any flashbacks that may have been in subsequent seasons, unlike Andy’s (Ted King) character, who died in the first season.
In 2016, during an interview TV lineCharmed producer and showrunner Brad Kern explained the reasons for this strange disappearance:I tried like crazy to have him appear in flashbacks and put pictures of him on the wall, but the studio told me – and I later found out that this was not really true – that he had to be paid per episode just to use it. his picture. We didn’t have the opportunity. Well, that’s what I was told.“
In the same interview, Brad Kern also explained that he blamed himself for not including Shannen Doherty at the end of Charmed. “We just didn’t think it was possible to do one – that he wanted to do it or that the channel couldn’t bring him back. Maybe we were wrong.”
The showrunners wished they could have at least included a photo of Prue in the final cut of the last episode of Charmed, but it didn’t work out. “You can’t finish Charmed without respecting Prue“, he admitted.
“But the leaders clearly told us that this was almost impossible to achieve and it would cost us a lot of money. So I had to make a choice: should I use the money to pay for one photo, or rather to bring back Patti Halliwell, Penny Halliwell or even Leo?“Therefore, Charmed ended on May 21, 2006, after 8 seasons, without any mention of Prue Halliwell’s character…
Charmed airs every night Monday to Friday from 4.20pm on 6ter. The series is also available in its entirety on Prime Video.
