Left-back Marcelo may be experiencing something unheard of since his return to Fluminense. A starter in the tricolor club’s last five games, the number 12 is close to starting his sixth consecutive game, which has not yet happened in 2023.
After suffering from muscle problems, more specifically in the calf region, Marcelo recovered after Fifa date and started a sequence of matches. Against Coritiba, on Monday, he should be a starter again.
The Real Madrid idol made his debut in April in the first round of the Copa Libertadores against Sporting Cristal (PER), and played in three consecutive games before being rested. Upon his return, however, against The Strongest (BOL), calf pain kept him out of the fight for two weeks.
Marcelo was ready to return to the Libertadores once again, in the defeat of River Plate (ARG) 5-1, and he came to revive. As in the current sequence, he made five consecutive appearances, but this fifth in question marked a new calf injury. The injury was against Flamengo, in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil.
The 35-year-old forward was sidelined for more than a month and returned to action against Bahia on 24 June as a starter. Since then, he has started the next four games in the starting 11. The opponents were, in addition to the northeastern team, Sporting Cristal (PER), São Paulo, Internacional and Flamengo.
Now the expectation is to have the left-back back in the next round of the Brasileirão. The Tricolor faces Coritiba on Monday, at 7 pm (Brasilia time), for the 16th round of the national tournament. The duel will be played at the Couto Pereira stadium, in Curitiba.
