How Inventions Were Misdirected

In addition to Oppenheimer’s atomic bomb, inventions such as dynamite, pepper spray and the AK-47 rifle have also failed their creators.

Oppenheimer, a mega-production which premiered in theaters this Thursday (20), tells the story of the emergence of atomic bomb. OR scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer he became known as the “father” of the invention, but later became an activist against the use of the weapon.

Oppenheimer said he had no regrets about creating the atomic bomb, but was saddened to see his invention used for selfish purposes.

Like Oppenheimer, other inventions also had their initial goals misrepresented. And, many times, they have caused regrets in the creators. See some examples:

Alfred Nobel

The chemist, engineer and inventor from whom the Nobel prize was the creator of dynamite. But his initial goal was to develop a safer explosive and he thought of dynamite as an alternative to nitroglycerin.

Nobel believed that his invention would help the world to have no more wars.

“My dynamite will lead to peace before a thousand world conventions. As soon as men discover that whole armies can be completely destroyed in an instant, they will surely bring about the desired peace,” said the Swedish chemist.

Mikhail Kalashinikov

Russian engineer and general Mikhail Kalashinikov is the creator of the famous AK-47 rifleused by the Russian Army in WWII.

The weapon was designed to be a simple automatic rifle, but it has become one of the greatest weapons in history, being responsible for more deaths than any other rifle ever invented.

Although he felt saddened by the uncontrolled distribution of weapons, he was proud of his inventions and their reputation for reliability, emphasizing that his rifle is “a weapon of defense” and “not a weapon of offense”.

Mikhail Kalashnikov also designed weapons other than the AK-47, such as the RPK machine gun.

Kamran Loghman

Kamran Loghman is the creator of the famous Pepper spray. He worked for the FBI in the 80s and helped weaponise pepper. Today the equipment is used by police officers all over the world.

After an incident at the University of California in 2011, the creator said in an interview with the New York Times that “I have never seen such inappropriate and inappropriate use of chemical agents.”

On that occasion, the agents sprayed the young people who were demonstrating peacefully. The act led to court decisions outright banning the use of pepper spray in situations that did not present a risk.

Roberto Propst

know the office cabin? The concept was created by Robert Prost with the aim of being the office of the future, bringing more fluidity and interaction to denser working environments.

The cubicle project became known as the Action Office, and companies soon joined in on the innovation, mainly because it was a cheap idea.

However, little by little, the idea of fluidity has become what the name really proposes: cubicles! And as the author himself mentioned, they have become spaces similar to “boxes like labyrinths of mice”.

The author of the creation described cubicle offices as a “monolithic folly”.
