The United States confirm their favoritism and debut with the victory over Vietnam at the Women’s World Cup

This Friday, the United States beat Vietnam 3-0, at Eden Park, for their debut in the Women’s World Cup. Current world champions and FIFA ranking leaders, the Americans dominated the 90 minutes, but performed far below expectations in a matchup between the top powerhouse of women’s football and a rookie selection in the world and 32nd in the FIFA rankings.

With the win, the United States lead Group E, with three points, while Vietnam are in bottom place, with no points. The Americans will be back on the pitch next Wednesday, against the Netherlands, at 10pm (Brasilia time), at the Sky Stadium. On Thursday, Vietnam will face Portugal, at 4:30, at the FMG Waikato Stadium.

Since kick-off, the Americans have shown that they come as one of the favorites for the title and one of the main teams at the World Cup. The USA kept the ball up front and opened the scoring after 13 minutes. Horan played for Alex Morgan on the edge of the area, the midfielder touching first, with his back heel, leaving Sophia Smith in front of goal. The player kicked in a cross to open the scoring.

In the 53rd minute the Americans widened with another goal from Sophia Smith. After a cross in the area, the Vietnamese goalkeeper got off to a bad start and the ball landed on the feet of the American midfielder, who closed hard and pierced the opposing defence. With the goal, the selections went to half time with a score of 2 to 0, but this did not reflect the dominance of the reigning champions.

In the second half, the ball remained in the feet of the United States team, who again created many chances, but only scored in the 31st minute. Sophia Smith battled for the ball down the backline and crossed low into the box. Horan dominated and took the shot to score the third goal and confirm the American win, which just wasn’t more elastic due to the good performance of goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh and missed chances from the USA.
