Why does Meta want to give away what everyone sells for free?
I’m quite intrigued by Meta’s movement on the grand chessboard that the (multibillion-dollar) market for generative AI has become.
While the other big techs (remember: Microsoft, Apple, Google and Amazon) invest in closed models and teams that work in secret, Meta opens up model after model, thus becoming the Open Source standard for tens of thousands of developers around the world.
The latest version of the old Facebook (doesn’t it suck to rename a company and have it called ex-something forever?) is the second version of the LLaMA model, which is pretty powerful. The acronym LLaMA stands for Large Language Model Meta AI.
Recalling that Meta’s AI team is top of the line, led by Touring award winner Yann LeCun.
Why does Meta want to give away what everyone sells for free?
Because while the other weavers need to sell patterns, Meta earns money in another way, by adding these technologies to its products, of which it is the undisputed leader.
Therefore, they are simply hindering the monetization of others because this product does not generate any value for Meta, which does not sell clouds or APIs.
Also, they can and are becoming the preferred model of open source generative AI, which can and will become very relevant (anyone remember Android or Java?).
