Strike in Hollywood: Amazon is splitting its series into two parts

While back-to-school schedules are being discussed in the context of social conflict between studios and broadcasters in Hollywood, channels and streaming platforms are deciding to prepare their back-to-school schedules. This applies, among other things, to Prime Video, which revealed its intention to split the second season of the Invincible animated series into two parts.

During the series’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, Amazon said that the second season of the series, based on creator Robert Kirkman’s comic book of the same name, will return on November 3, and the first of four episodes of Season 2 will be eight episodes.

A new episode will be broadcast on the platform every week. The second part of the superhero series will be released on a yet-to-be-specified date, in early 2024.

The move, which Amazon declined to comment on, comes after Hollywood was rocked by a historic strike by the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and SAG-AFTRA (Performers Union) over the use of artificial intelligence and residual streaming rights.

Due to the lack of production of scripted series, channels and broadcasters will have to extend already completed shows, as it is unclear when the guilds and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP, which represents studios and broadcasters) will return to the negotiating table.

Invincible is released on Prime Video in early 2021. The adult anime series, voiced by Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, Zazie Beatz, and Seth Rogen, debuted with the first three episodes before moving to weekly airing for the remaining five episodes of the first season.

A surprise episode and an impressive trailer

During San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Kirkman also announced the July 21 release of Invincible Atom Eve, an episode about the origin of the character Samantha Eve Wilkins, voiced by Gillian Jacobs in the original version.

While you wait to find Season 2 on November 3rd, discover its trailer above with an impressive cast. There are no fewer than 26 names, so many that you have to hit pause to make sure you don’t miss anyone. It’s hard not to be impressed by such an avalanche of talent, Sterling K. From Brown (This Is Us) and Rob Delaney (Catastrophe) to Leah Thompson (Back to the Future), via Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black).

There is nothing surprising in this. The first season was well received and it would be amazing if the second season does not live up to expectations. After all, you can bring all these talents to the project only if you have shown a great quality of story, animation and humor that will make people want to be a part of your world. We bet it will be again.
