Spotify announces an increase in subscription prices

Music streaming service Spotify announced this Monday (24) a price adjustment for premium subscriptions in more than 50 countries, including Brazil. The increase affects the Individual, Duo and University plans, while the Family plan remains at the same value.

In Brazil, the individual plan will go from R$ 19.90 to R$ 21.90 per month, the Duo plan (for two users) from R$ 24.90 to R$ 27.90 per month and the university plan from R$ 9.90 to R$ 11.90 per month. The Family plan, which allows up to 6 users from the same address, still costs R $ 34.90 per month.

Justification for the increase

Spotify said the step was taken to “keep innovating”. “In order to continue to innovate, we are making changes to our Premium pricing in several markets around the world. These updates will help us continue to add value to the fans and artists on our platform,” the platform statement said.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek previously hinted at the hike during an earnings call in April when he said the company was “ready to raise prices.” This was the first premium plan upgrade in the US in 12 years.

Impact on users

Premium subscribers will be notified by email of the adjustment and will have a 1 month grace period until the new price takes effect, unless they cancel before the end of that period. In the case of Brazilian users, existing subscribers will continue to pay the current price until billing in September.
