Tim Burton Recalls The Reasons That Made Him Give Up Directing More Batman Movies
Tim Burton revealed that he decided to leave the franchise of Bat Man after disagreements, such as the idea of putting nipples on the hero’s uniform. In an interview with the Empire Magazine (via CineBuzz), to celebrate 30 years of Batman: The Returndirector explained why he dropped out of the third film.
Burton remembered how Batman Forever(1995) followed another path, with a more comic tone than the director’s traditional films. “[Naquela época] they went the other way. That’s the funny thing about it,” she stated.
“But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Okay. Wait a second here. You complain about me, that I’m too weird, I’m too dark, and then you put nipples on the uniform? Screw you!’ Serious. So yeah I guess that’s why I’m not done [fazendo um terceiro filme],” he explained.
costume designer Batman Forever and Batman & Robin(1997), Jose Fernandez talked about choosing to keep the nipples on the uniform in an interview with Honey Magazine. According to Fernandez, the situation got out of his control.
“With the attire of Val Kilmer in Batman Forever, the nipples were one of the things I added. It wasn’t a fetish for me, it was more inspired by Roman armor – like Centurions,” he said. “And in the comics, characters always looked like they were naked with spray paint on them — it was all about anatomy, and I like showing anatomy.”
“I don’t know exactly where my head was at that time, but that’s what I remember. And so, I added the nipples. I had no idea it would end up being all this buzz about it,” added the costume designer.
Fernandez stated that, in the first film, the nipples were a small detail, but later they became something bigger: “In the first one, they were just a small blob of clay. It was subtle – it was a blip. But stop Batman & Robin,Joel Schumacher loved the nipples, so he said, ‘Let’s show them.’ Schumacher I wanted them sharp, like, with spikes. They were also circled, both externally and internally – everything was turned into a feature of the uniform.”
The costume designer stated that he “didn’t want to do that, but he’s the boss, so we honed them, circled them and it all got kind of ridiculous.” In addition, he also commented on the reason for the outfit of the batgirl not having nipples:
“With Alicia Silverstone, they also wanted nipples. They said, ‘If guys have nipples, girls should have nipples too.’ After I carved it, everyone realized that maybe it wasn’t a good idea. It was a little lewd so we took the nipples off.”
