Where is Barbie Land? Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson answers

Neil deGrasse Tysonknown as the astrophysicist who presents Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey — series that unravels science concepts in a didactic way —, explained where the land of Barbie would be located. For that, tyson based on scenes from the movie Greta Gerwig.

In Barbie, the orientation of the Moon displayed in the doll’s world is between 20 and 40 degrees latitude north of Earth. The trees on the horizon constrain the latitude to between 20 and 30 degrees. The Sun and Moon rose and set over the ocean. So, if it’s in the US, Barbie World is somewhere in the Florida Keys.

Neil also shared his opinion on the film, noting that he is not “an expert” on the Mattel doll. “You talk about socialization. Other dolls were babies. You are a young girl and you are trained to care for and feed a baby”, raised the scientist. “And isn’t that socialization? You have to take care of your little children and that’s your job. That’s your role in society.”
