The ‘Fast and the Furious’ actor files a lawsuit against the Home Depot chain for a value of 450 million dollars, more than R$ 2 billion

Tirese Gibsonfamous for his roles in the saga Fast & Furioushas filed a lawsuit against the Home Depot chain of stores, an American retailer specializing in household products.

According to a post published on his social network profile, the actor has announced that he is seeking compensation of 450 million dollars, the equivalent of more than R$ 2 billion. Tyrese claims he was the victim of racial profiling in one of Los Angeles’ shops on Feb. 11.

According to the information of Variety, Tyrese and his employees Eric Mora and Manuel Hernandez say they encountered problems when trying to complete a purchase at the store, due to an “alleged error in the checkout system.”

This mishap resulted in a wait of about 20 minutes, attracting the attention of other customers for the actor’s presence. Choosing to avoid the riot, Gibson opted to wait in the car while Mora and Hernandez tried to resolve the situation.

The actor reports that, after communicating his decision to the cashier, he received confirmation that everything was under control. However, when his colleagues tried to use Gibson’s credit card, the transaction was denied. The store staff, when questioned, merely quoted a “store policy” and requested further identification.

In Gibson’s defense, the lawsuit states that “the actions of the cashier and manager were discriminatory on the basis of race and origin. There is no other plausible explanation for the mistreatment of the plaintiffs… This is a clear and deplorable example of discriminatory treatment and racial profiling of consumers. Home Depot’s treatment of Gibson, Mora and Hernandez was humiliating and degrading.”

In response to the allegations, a Home Depot spokesperson said Variety: “Diversity and respect for all people are fundamental to who we are, and we do not tolerate any form of discrimination. We value Mr. Gibson as a client, and in the months following this incident, we have contacted him and his lawyers for several times to try to resolve your concerns. We will continue to do so.”
