Just a week to go until Venom 2 previews on Prime Video: Where’s the third movie?

The Marvel character that spawned Sony’s Spider-Man Universe: Venom is one of Spider-Man’s most famous foes. Ruben Fleischer’s first film, starring Tom Hardy as notorious symbiote-obsessed journalist Eddie Brock, was a hit when it was released in 2018, grossing over $800 million despite mixed reviews.

The success of Venom convinced Columbia Pictures and Marvel Entertainment to create a sequel titled Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In this sequel, Eddie Brock again struggles to co-exist with the changing alien Venom. When deranged serial killer Cletus Cassady also becomes host to an alien symbiote aka Carnage (Woody Harrelson), Eddie and Veno must put aside their differences to end his reign of terror.

The Andy Serkis sequel, due in 2021, also received mixed reviews—it earned a press rating of 1.7 out of 5 and an audience rating of 2.1 out of 5 on AlloCiné—but was still a box office success, grossing more than $500 million. (less than the first due to the pandemic), beating out other superhero movies that year, such as Shan-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, Everlasting and Black Widow.

If you haven’t caught this sequel yet, know that you have a week left until Venom: Let There Be Carnage hits the Prime Video platform catalog on August 19th. So you’ll be ready for the third Venom movie, because yes, a third installment is in the works!

Where is Venom 3?

Announced in late 2021 by producer Amy Pascal, Venom 3 will be directed by Kelly Marcel (who co-wrote and co-produced the first two Venoms) from a script by Kelly Marcel and Tom Hardy. It will be the fifth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, following Venom, Venom 2, Morbius and Madame Web.

Along with Tom Hardy, new actors have been announced in the cast, including Juno Temple (Ted Lasso) and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who are already in the MCU as Carl Mordo in Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange in the Madness multiverse.

Filming on Venom 3 began in June 2023 in Spain, but was halted the following month due to a double strike by SAG-AFTRA, the Actors Guild of America, and the historic double strike. WGA (Writers Guild of America, the union of American screenwriters that protects their copyright), against AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers).

Production on this third – and arguably final installment – is currently on hold, joining a long list of projects stalled by the strike. If the actors and writers come to an agreement with the studios and platforms and on the recap, Venom 3 could be released in theaters. But will it be able to hit the planned July 10, 2024 release date?

Nothing is less certain. But Marvel fans are already theorizing about this third installment, such as a potential meeting between Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, especially scene after scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage hits Prime Video on August 19.
