The creators of John Wick and Cowboy Bebop team up for Lazarus, a Japanese anime produced by the famous studios MAPPA (Attack on Titan).
When the director of one of the most influential action sagas of the past decade teams up with the creator of some of the best anime ever made, you’re not dreaming. So is the dream duo reunited by Lazarus, a new animated series to be discovered soon on Adult Swim.
Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo series creator ShinichirÅ Watanabe was in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con to reveal the first images of his brand new creation.
The anime titled Lazarus is set in the near future in 2052, in a world where all forms of violence have disappeared thanks to a mysterious serum. However, its creator, Dr. Skinner, reveals that the vaccine he designed actually hides a poison that will kill all vaccinated patients in three years.
For this new series, Watanabe has teamed up with American director Chad Stahelski, who is responsible for directing the show’s action sequences. A fitting return, with the latter revealing that he was inspired by Cowboy Bebop to draw the climax of John Wick 4.

The MAPPA studio (Attack on Titan, JuJutsu Kaisen) will take care of the animation of the project, while the jazz musicians Kamasi Washington, Floating Points and Bonobo will sign the original soundtrack of the anime.
The animated series will likely air in 2024 on Adult Swim, the animation subscription block available on HBO Max.
