Since the deaths of councilor Marielle Franco (PSOL) and driver Anderson Gomes, in March 2018, five people interested in the investigation – witnesses or suspects – have been murdered. In addition to the violence, another fact calls attention: none of the crimes was solved by the police.
The most recent case is that of former councilor Jair Barbosa Tavares, known as Zico Bacana. He was killed on Monday the 7th in the Guadalupe neighborhood, north of Rio, together with his brother, Jorge Barbosa Tavares, and the waiter Marlon Correia dos Santos, who was passing on the street. Military Police said the shots came from an unidentified vehicle parked in front of the bakery where Zico was staying.
On social media, Zico presented himself as a military policeman and paratrooper. In a report by the CPI on the militias of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro, however, he was cited as the head of the militia groups. In 2018 he testified in the investigation into Marielle’s death.
‘Support’
With the testimony of the defendant’s collaborator Elcio Queiroz last month, the name of a person involved in the case, also murdered, became public. Edmilson da Silva de Oliveira, known as Macalé, was a retired military police sergeant in Rio de Janeiro and allegedly gave former Prime Minister Ronnie Lessa operational support to kill Marielle. Additionally, Queiroz reported that Macalé brokered Lessa’s hiring.
Suspected of having a connection to the Rio crime, the police officer was shot and killed, aged 54, in 2021, in the west area of the capital Fluminense. He would also be responsible for delivering the car used in the execution, a cobalt silver, to Lessa and former firefighter Maxwell Simões, Suel, arrested in a federal police operation on July 24th. According to the investigations, the former firefighter would have helped to hide the weapons the day after the arrests of Lessa and Queiroz, denounced as perpetrators of the crimes.
Bahia
Former military police officer Adriano Magalhães da Nóbrega died during a police operation aimed at capturing him in the municipality of Esplanada, Bahia, in 2020. Captain Adriano, as he was known, was appointed head of the militia “Office of Crime “, which was allegedly part of Lessa, accused of killing Marielle, and as involved in the alleged cracking plan (deviation of councilors’ salaries) of today’s Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) in the Legislative Assembly of Rio.
The former military police officer’s sister, Daniela da Nóbrega, said in an audio that the Planalto Palace offered commission posts in exchange for the former captain’s death.
Two days after Adriano was shot dead in a confrontation with prosecutors in Bahia, in February 2020, Daniela da Nóbrega tells a woman, whom she calls her aunt, that the former police officer knew already of the “order to denounce him”. According to her, “they had already given commissioned posts on the Planalto for her life”.
Adriano was wanted by the Justice for other crimes. He was denounced by the Public Prosecutor for having acted with the grabbing of land; irregular purchase, sale and lease of real estate; irregular collection of taxes from the local population; extortion and receiving stolen goods in Rio das Pedras. The Rio Public Prosecutor and the Federal Police worked with the hypothesis of Adriano’s involvement in Marielle’s death. Involvement, however, has not yet been proven.
Hélio de Paulo Ferreira, a militiaman who became known as Senhor das Armas, was killed in February this year, in an area of contention between paramilitary groups and drug traffickers in west Rio, investigating Marielle’s death. He was cited as one of the accomplices of fellow militiaman Orlando Oliveira de Araujo, a former prime minister known as Orlando de Curicica.
According to Curicica, who was sentenced to 25 years for murder, Ferreira was present at an alleged “Crime Bureau” meeting where Marielle’s death was plotted. The charges against Ferreira did not proceed.
The fifth name is Lucas do Prado Nascimento da Silva, known as Todynho. He was appointed by the Civil Police responsible for the changes made to the document of the vehicle used in the murder of Marielle and Anderson Gomes. Todynho was killed in April 2018, less than a month after the former adviser was executed. According to military police, he was the target of an ambush on Avenida Brasil, a road that connects west, north and downtown Rio.
The information comes from the newspaper The State of São Paulo.
