Three years later, the duo met a taxi driver. A new Hollywood figure, this feverish thriller – part autobiography by screenwriter Paul Schrader – depicts the paranoid climate of post-Vietnam America, where social inequality contributes to the rise of violence in big cities.
At the top of the bill, Robert De Niro stars as Travis Bickle, a Vietnam War veteran turned taxi driver in New York City. His nightly encounters, as well as the daily abuse he witnesses, gradually make him lose his mind until he is tasked with rescuing an underage prostitute from her pimps.
Deeply involved in his role, the actor notably got his taxi driver’s license, spent time on a military base perfecting his accent and practiced firearms.
Blindly trusting him, Martin Scorsese let him come up with his own score, giving birth to legendary scenes such as the famous “Are you talking to me?”completely improvised.
Robert De Niro’s performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. But the prized statue went to Peter Finch for his portrayal of Howard Beale in Network: Main Basse sur la Télévision.
It wasn’t until 1981 that Robert De Niro won it for his part thanks to his interpretation of boxing champion Jake La Motta in Raging Bull, also directed by Martin Scorsese.
