Taxi Driver 2? You will never see this sequel

There’s a lot to be said for Martin Scorsese’s classic Taxi Driver. Like this legend that a filmmaker came very close to murdering a film producer. Or the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is an absolute fan of the production, especially a very specific scene.

Regarding the screening of the feature film, we chose to watch the sequel to Taxi Driver. Yes, yes, next! Because that Taxi Driver 2, which ultimately never saw the light of day, was actually mentioned by Scorsese with his screenwriter Paul Schrader and his lead actor Robert De Niro.

What could be the continuation of “Taxi Driver”? “I want to know where Travis would be today.”said Robert De Niro At the Guardian microphone in 2013. “There was something about this guy, with all the anger and alienation that a city can bring. Marty and I are from New York, and you can feel alienated.”

A few years later, invited to the Marrakesh festival, De Niro confirmed that discussions had indeed taken place about a new Taxi Driver. “We talked about it with Marty and Paul Schrader came up with something.”Dropped by an American actor at Collider’s microphone. “But it never worked. I think there might be something interesting to say about what happened to him, but we never found what would work.”

A Hollywood star in 2019 he finally told GQ That Taxi Driver 2 could not be done “Only if you have something special that speaks to our time and adds something to the original film.” Not a word since then…

So everything is pretty clear, if we trust the words of Robert De Niro and the silence received on the subject for several years: Travis Bickle’s night of obscurity on the streets of New York should not return to the big screen. But fans of the actor and Scorsese rejoice: the feature film Killers of the Flower Moon, a new collaboration from the iconic duo, hits theaters on October 18.
