A judge in Nicaragua has ordered the confiscation of all assets of a prestigious Jesuit university, the institution announced, as the government steps up its crackdown on Catholic clergy and Church-affiliated institutions.
In a letter seen by Reuters dated Tuesday and addressed to the university community, the Central American University (UCA) said it had been informed by a criminal court in the capital Managua that all of its assets had been transferred to the government.
The letter said the government had said it would guarantee all educational programmes, but the university said it would suspend all its lectures and administrative activities, without providing a date for resumption.
Widely regarded as one of Central America’s top private educational institutions, UCA said it has been accused of being a “hub for organized terrorism by criminal groups,” a charge it believes to be false.
While UCA isn’t the first private university to be confiscated by President Daniel Ortega’s government — more than two dozen have been similarly affected — it is by far the best known.
Ortega’s press office did not initially respond to a request for comment.
The UCA is the alma mater of many student leaders active in the 2018 anti-government protests that left more than 360 dead, most at the hands of police and other government-affiliated forces, according to groups for i human rights.
