In news that seems timely enough, comedy giants Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle will soon be hosting a series of comedy shows together. The two actors made headlines this year after being disturbed on stage. Rock was slapped by Will Smith between an Oscar comedy snippet and an angry fan he slammed Dave Chappelle during a comedy show at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year.
This week the news has come that Dave Chappelle will be joining Chris Rock for a show at the O2 Theater in London. The show won’t finish until September 3, but tickets go on sale much sooner. Ticketmaster noted that the presale of tickets started on June 9th and the full general sale begins on June 10th. Only people over the age of 18. you will be allowed to participate.
This isn’t the first time the two have shared a stage together since the two viral incidents. A few weeks ago, the two Chappelle and Rock shared the stage in the United States , appearing in the famous West Hollywood venue, The Comedy Store. The two joked about their respective incidents, with Chappelle mocking Rock, while noting that Will Smith had at least approached him. Dave Chappelle joked:
At least someone with a big name has hit you! I was hit by a homeless man with leaves in his hair.
Overall though, Chris Rock didn’t fully explain what happened during the Oscars when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith and her hair looked like her. Gi-Jane, presumably without the context in which Smith suffers from alopecia. Will Smith took the stage and slapped Chris Rock in the face. Smith went on to win Best Actor for portraying him in King Richard. For his part, the actor and comedian hasn’t really explained his side of the story, but Rock threw A + jokes at his expense. .
Anyone who says “words hurt” has never been punched in the face.
A ride for Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock acting together
Separately, after Chris Rock’s incident, Dave Chappelle was also attacked on stage by a author who was subsequently arrested on four minor charges . Although many jokes have been made, some comedians have expressed apprehension about the acting, including Howie Mandel, who pointed out MYSELF! accidents were his “worst fear to come true”. The it was a nerve-wracking talk who have come for some comedians since the accidents happened.
Well-known comedians have also talked about the gravity of both situations, including Sarah Silverman. The marry me said the actress during an appearance on Visualization that she is not “scared” personally, but it was a moment that shocked the community.
It’s crazy for some reason, I’m not, but it’s weird. Personally, I’m not afraid, but I think people expect more from their actors than their representatives and it’s very strange. … If you think about it, a very powerful man stood up and attacked someone, then sat down and enjoyed the show, laughed and clapped. And the audience said, ‘I guess nothing happened. And then they just accepted it. And that’s how trauma works. There is no slow motion or music to tell us how to feel and this is a defining moment.
While not everyone is nervous about the future, an interesting feature of Rock and Chappelle reuniting on stage is that they’ve had this shared history of onstage attacks. Doing this together seems like a statement. Rock and Chappelle haven’t talked much, but their upcoming shared performance is likely to generate a lot of thoughts and opinions about recent events and what they might mean for cabaret and the safety of comedians in general.
I also wonder if more security will be implemented to make sure nothing like this happens again. Either way, despite the gravity of both moments, it appears that both comedians are doing their best to move forward lightly after their respective incidents. Fun Marlon Wayans recently revealed that the slap in particular was an important topic of conversation within the comedy community and everyone has jokes and weren’t afraid to throw them to the host of the 2022 Oscars.
