Lawsuits have been filed to force violators to repair the damage caused to biomes not only in the Amazon, but also in the Cerrado
Loggers in the Amazon have blocked more than R$95 million from the Federal Court at the request of the Attorney General’s Office (AGU). The lawsuits were filed to oblige the culprits to pay compensation for the damages caused, as part of legal measures to protect the environment.
According to the institution, the blockade of values was possible after the creation of a strategic group aimed at actions to protect biomes and Brazilian cultural heritage, AGU Recupera. The blocked amount belonged to loggers investigated in three lawsuits filed in Pará, as well as two in Roraima.
The AGU also points out that the group has already filed 34 public civil actions to charge 479 million reais to the offenders, located in the Amazon and Cerrado regions. In addition to blocking the assets, the institution has also requested precautionary measures such as an area embargo and the suspension of access to public credit.
In the statement, the AGU said it will participate in the reports that will evaluate the decisions of the Federal Court and whether the measures comply with the determinations of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) for the quantification of environmental damage.
