The messages obtained by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) show how the command of the Military Police of the Federal District (PM-DF) exchanged anti-democratic messages and false news about the elections. They also discussed alternatives to the coup to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in power.
The conversations supported the complaint brought by the PGR against seven officers, most of them colonels, the highest rank in the guild hierarchy. They are accused in the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of crimes such as omission, coup d’état and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law for allegedly fomenting an uprising against the election result. The complaint claims that the leadership of the Military Police in the Federal District was “ideologically tainted”.
Consult the list of defendants:
– Colonel Fábio Augusto Vieira, former General Commander of the Military Police of the Federal District;
– Colonel Klepter Rosa Gonçalves, former deputy commander of the corporation;
– Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime Barreto, former commander of the Operations Department;
– Colonel Paulo José Ferreira de Sousa Bezerra, temporarily head of the Operations Department on 8 January;
– Colonel Marcelo Casimiro Vasconcelos Rodrigues, former head of the 1st Regional Police Command of the PMDF;
– Major Flavio Silvestre de Alencar;
– Lieutenant Rafael Pereira Martins.
The messages speak of printed votes, military intervention to annul the electoral result and support of the Armed Forces for Bolsonaro, criticize the Federal Supreme Court and reproduce conspiracy theories of fraud at the polls.
On November 1, when the victory of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) had already been won at the polls, Colonel Marcelo Casimiro Vasconcelos Rodrigues, former head of the 1st regional police command of the DF, sent a photo of Bolsonaro with the caption: “the face of one who has cards up his sleeve”.
Officials also share several fake audio, video, and text about the election and the source code of the polls. Rodrigues goes so far as to say that the content “may not prove anything, but it will lift spirits.” Major Flávio Silvestre de Alencar says it would be “an illusion to believe in clean elections”. A police officer identified as Márcio Gomes writes that Bolsonaro’s “only chance” was, with the support of the Armed Forces, “to curb the excesses of the STF and restore order, by marking new elections with a verifiable vote”.
At the end of December, when the Bolsonarists had been encamped for more than a month in front of the army headquarters in Brasilia, in protest against Lula’s victory and in favor of a military coup, Major Flávio Silvestre de Alencar wrote, “In the first demonstration, let Congress invade.” The attack on the buildings on Praça dos Três Poderes occurred about two weeks later.
Jorge Eduardo Naime Barreto was arrested on February 7 in Operation Lesa Pátria.
Messages recovered from the Attorney General’s Office also point out that there were agents from the prime minister’s intelligence sector and a civilian infiltrated the camp, which in the PGR’s assessment shows that the Federal District Military Police had intelligence on extremist plans which reached their peak on January 8th
“The operational ‘failure’ was not due to deficiencies in the PMDF’s intelligence services. In fact, what happened was a voluntary omission on the part of the defendants who, with unitary intentions, accepted the results envisaged by the anti-democratic mafia and adhered to the criminal intent of the insurgents”, says an excerpt from the PGR complaint.
On the eve of state attacks on the Congress, Planalto and STF buildings, Colonel Paulo José Ferreira de Sousa Bezerra says he has received information that the extremists were prepared for “war” and would opt for “all or nothing”. “It will work,” Colonel Marcelo Casimiro Vasconcelos Rodrigues replies.
When Lula took office, the police exchanged messages criticizing the military for failing to join a coup. The soldiers of the Brazilian army are called “watermelons” – despite the “green shell”, allusion to the uniform, they would be internally “red”, i.e. aligned with leftist ideologies. “Apparently, only the Navy commander was willing to side with Bolsonaro,” writes a policeman.
