This is a curiosity in Mads Mikkelsen’s filmography. Before her big Hollywood career, notably in James Bond, Marvel, Harry Potter and the Star Wars movie, which she sadly botched, the actress played on screen… a porn star! It was in the 2005 Spanish-Danish feature film Torremolinos 73.
Torremolinos 73 immerses viewers in Franco’s Puritan Spain of the early 1970s. We follow the story of Alfredo (Javier Camara), a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman whose business, on the brink of financial ruin, finds one of its kind. The most outstanding and surprising solution to get rid of this: to offer his employees to shoot scientific films in Super 8 for the development of the so-called “reproduction of the world encyclopedia” intended for the Scandinavian countries.
A dramatic comedy, which is one of many works where porn was invited, Mads Mikkelsen plays the famous Daniel X actor, who is invited to make a film inspired by the director Alfredo and Ingmar Bergman. Suffice it to say that this Torremolinos 73, qualified upon release as “funny, sexy, sad and deep” by Paris Match, represents a remarkable step in the Danish actor’s career.
In 2021 interview for VultureThe one who plays the villain in Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny was inspired by the experience, which he clearly holds a fond memory of. “This project was crazy. I don’t know what happened. Nobody spoke English on the set. And one day the whole team forgot about me on the beach.”Mikkelsen laughs.
“When the director got home, he only had 50% of the film to shoot and the rest he didn’t shoot”The Scandinavian actor continues. “He was always running out of time. Seeing all of this, I thought he would never make this movie. But when I saw it, it was sweet and funny. I can see that there’s a lot missing, but the tone of the movie is good.”
