Protests are taking place in 14 states; The country has accompanied the massacres committed by the security forces in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia
The political organizations of the black movement are calling for demonstrations in 14 states on Thursday 24 August against the death of Mother Bernadette and the massacres that took place in Sao Paulo, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. The meeting is convened by two fronts of entities, the Black Coalition for Rights and the Black Convergence, which bring together groups such as Uneafro Brazil, Unified Black Movement (MNU), CONEN, Unegro, Geledés, among others.
The act was defined on August 10, after a virtual meeting with the participation of 250 people. The date was also chosen to commemorate the death of Luiz Gama, an abolitionist activist and an important figure in Brazilian history.
In São Paulo, the act is scheduled for the open space of the MASP, on Avenida Paulista, with the concentration scheduled for 6pm. Simone Nascimento, coordinator of the MNU and co-state deputy (PSOL-SP), underlines the importance of the act. “The black movements have united to bring about a change in public safety policy. It is unacceptable that the number of homicides continues to increase in Brazil. There will be no democracy as long as there is racism.”
The organizations have built a calendar of struggles, with monthly mobilizations until November 20, the date on which Black Consciousness is remembered in Brazil. The goal is to file complaints with the STF, state and federal prosecutors, and the National Congress. Among the requests are a request to the STF to ban reactive policing in communities and favelas and the creation of a federal law requiring, among other requests, security cameras on the uniforms of security officers.

Protesters protest against the death of Mother Bernadette, who was murdered in Quilombo Pitanga dos Palmares on Thursday 17 August. Two helmeted gunmen invaded the home of the quilombola leader and shot her, which killed her instantly. She was under the protection of the human rights defenders program, but family members said the police spent about 30 minutes a day with Mother Bernadette.
The act is also a response to the police massacres that took place in Guarujá on the coast of São Paulo, when 19 people were killed by the so-called Operation Shield, an action that began after the death of Rota’s police officer, Patrick Reis , on June 27.
During the same period, there were police actions in Rio de Janeiro and in Bahia. In the capital Rio de Janeiro, in the Penha complex, police officers killed 10 people on August 2, accused of fighting organized crime in the region. In Bahia, the police killed 32 people, between July 28 and August 4, after police operations also with the justification of the fight against organized crime.
