Judge Fátima Bezerra Maranhão, who appeared in the list of widows of former governors entitled to high pensions, withdrew this Monday 21 from the action presented to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to return to receive the benefit of R $ 31 1,000, also earning an average of R$ 62,500 from the Court of Justice of Paraíba (TJ-PB). She was married to former governor José Maranhão, who died in February 2021. In 2018, she told the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that the couple’s assets were R$8 million.
As shown the Estadao, the pension was suspended in May 2020, after the STF ruled the payment was unconstitutional. Former housekeepers and widows say they are in a “state of social vulnerability” as they are elderly, and say they are directly dependent on their pension for survival.
Now, politicians and widows resort to the STF to recover the benefit. The only dropout so far has been Fátima Bezerra. The judge informed Minister Luiz Fux, rapporteur of the case, that she “is no longer interested in this case and, therefore, requests the withdrawal of the action”. Currently Fátima is president of the 1st Civil Section of the Court of Justice of Paraíba (TJ-PB) and of the Regional Electoral Court of the state (TRE-PB). In June of this year alone, he received R $ 80,200 from TJ-PB, as well as R $ 9,000 from TRE-PB. This earned him R $ 60.4 net.
In May 2020, when the pension was last paid, 14 former governors and widows of former governors of Paraíba received a total of BRL 216,900, according to data from the State Audit Office (TCE-PB). This was equivalent to an annual expenditure of 2.8 million reais for the public coffers.
If the state pays the pension again, the expenditure tends to be even greater, since the salary of the governor of Paraíba was readjusted, in January of this year, from R$ 23,500.82 to R$ 31,173.06, with a 32% increase.
