With the arrival of Blue Beetle (2023) in theaters, Bruna Marquezine makes her long-awaited international debut – and specialized critics have already opined about the performance of the Brazilian actress in the feature film. In the movie, Marquezine interprets jennylove interest of the protagonist, Jaime Reyeslived by Xolo Maridueña.

The feature film and the Brazilian’s performance, however, were not unanimity among the main cinema vehicles in the world. Based on reviews collected by the Estadãoand by POPLine about what is being said about Bruna’s debut, few vehicles comment directly on the actress’s performance.

O The New York Timesin an unfavorable review of the film, wrote that it lacks “charisma and humor” to be conveyed by Xolo Maridueña to the character, going so far as to say that Xolo has “a baby face” and “puppy eyes”.

O indiewire rated the film with a “C” grade. In the text, the site says that Bruna “had little to do in her first role in Hollywood”. Other publications also cited the same fact, complaining about the lack of depth of the characters – in these cases, pointing out flaws more in the script than in the performances.

“[Bruna Marquezine] had little to do in her first Hollywood role other than play tough and look too grown up and sophisticated to fall in love with a kid like Jaime. [papel de Xolo].”


The Hollywood Handle

The vehicle, in turn, put the name of Bruna Marquezine in the title of the review, stating that she “flew high” in Blue Beetle.

“Jenny Kord from Bruna Marquezine it was surprisingly impactful, especially during the film’s second and third acts. [Bruna] Marquezine has this sweet chemistry that feels natural with [Xolo] Maridueña”.


Roger Ebert’s website

The site founded by renowned critic roger ebertwho died in 2013, was not moved by the performance of Marquezine, and gave the film three stars out of five. The difference, in relation to The New York Times, is that the publication linked this fact to an “exaggeration” in the artist’s performance.

“Jenny and Jaime don’t have the slightest chemistry, in part because Marquezine can’t help but overdo it, pushing every facial expression to the limit.”


The Hollywood Reporter

A The Hollywood Reporterpraised the film in general. The review celebrated the cast, saying the actors are “engaging” with “valuable contributions”. The highlight was Belissa Escobado, who plays the sister of Xolo’s character, and Bruna.

“The entire supporting cast is very engaging, with valuable contributions, especially from [Belissa] Escobedo like the clever Milagro and [Bruna] Marquezine as Jenny – whose desire to live close to a loving family draws her to the Reyes clan and spurs her romance with Jaime [Xolo Maridueña]. Together they have lovely chemistry.”
