“The Witcher”: Geralt’s role is “demanding”, according to the director

According to the information of colliderduring an interview with Joke on screenMarc Jobst, director of “The Witcher”, has spoken candidly about the departure of Henry Cavill and the demanding nature of filming the series.

He highlighted Cavill’s dedication to his role as Geralt of Rivia, stating that the actor insisted on pulling off every stunt, taking care of every detail to the smallest detail.

This level of commitment is admirable, from the director’s point of view, but it took a physical and mental toll on Cavill. Jobst explained that normally an actor would have a stunt double for certain scenes, lightening the workload. However, Cavill rejected this option, resulting in some standout fight scenes, but placing enormous pressure on himself.

Henry’s done three series, they’re asking for shows to do, you know, they’re huge. Henry does every beat of his stunts, doesn’t even allow a hand. If you’re doing a close-up of a hand holding a sword, it must be his hand. Usually what you do is bring in a stunt double. Henry’s going to come out and shoot another scene where he’s somewhere else, and you’ve got someone else on his hands, so you don’t have to disturb your number one. Henry doesn’t, and so the results are extraordinary. You’re working first with an amazing athlete, who trains hours in advance, and then films for 12 hours, and who cares deeply about the work he does.

This is wearing down your number one. So after three series, I feel, ‘Okay, he started the show, and if he feels like he’s done what he could, then I trust him.’ That focus that he has, that desire to get it right is a gift to work with because it elevates everyone to say, “Good enough is not good enough.” It must be fantastic.’

Cavill’s exit remains a mystery

While the exact reasons for Cavill’s departure were not disclosed, rumors circulated that he was dissatisfied with the series’ alterations from the source material.

Fantasy books, written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, were the basis of the series. Writer and executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach cited these rumors cryptically, implying that there were behind-the-scenes issues that only a few know about.

Despite Cavill’s departure, ‘The Witcher’ continues to captivate audiences as it recently wrapped its third season on Netflix. Fans have hailed Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt of Rivia, a character he’s portrayed to rave reviews since the series debuted in 2019.

With the announcement that Liam Hemsworth will take on the lead role in season four, the series should continue to be hugely popular.
