Yamaha XMax ABS is the perfect companion for the city and the streets

The Yamaha XMax ABS scooter is a scooter that makes those behind its handlebars feel good. And despite the pun, this is something very true, as it attracts a lot of attention from everyone in traffic, both in cars and motorcycles of any engine capacity.

The Yamaha XMax ABS scooter that has just arrived on the Brazilian market has shaken up the mid-engined scooter segment, a niche that until then had the Citycom 300 as its main exponent. Within a few months, the XMAX conquered the leadership of the category, leaving the competition behind.

And XMax ABS has attributes that do justice to that success. Although it was launched in 2019 during the Salão Duas Rodas, it still has a very modern look, with bold lines that give it an appealing and instigating look and that also impresses with its dimensions, which look like a bigger scooter, with the and the width of the bench gives much of this impression of grandeur. The lines marked by folds and angles and the elongated headlights outlined by the LED DRL (Daytime Running Light) give the Japanese scooter an air of fury.

The XMAX ABS is thick, just fit it and you’ll find there’s plenty of room to fit. Sitting at my height of 1.8m, my legs have very good legroom up to the front shield. The rump is also very well accommodated in a very large comfortable seat to deal with for hours on end. The handlebars can be adjusted up to 20mm forwards or backwards, and the full digital panel is fixed to the scooter’s fairing, giving a greater sense of width.

Under the large seat of the XMAX there is room for two full-face helmets. There are two compartments on the front shield, one of which has a lock and 12V socket.

The XMax ABS has a single-cylinder, four-valve, liquid-cooled engine capable of delivering, according to Yamaha, respectively 22.8 hp at 7,000 rpm and 2.5 kgf.m at 5,550 rpm of power and maximum torque. Silent and with rapid responses, it is from 4,500 rpm that the strongest thrust is felt, gaining speed quickly.

I was curious about the ease of the XMax on the roads and that’s why this test had the most footage on the highways of São Paulo, along the northern coast and inland. I set off from Camburi beach, in São Sebastião, towards São Pulo, a journey of 160 km, and from São Paulo I set off towards São Roque, just over 100 km from the capital São Paulo. The Rio-Santos highway is quite tortuous, full of ups and downs and long straights, so I was able to test the excellent performance of the 250-cylinder engine, with great pick-ups and strong accelerations uphill, as well as a great cruising speed on the straights, where I got to see 140 km/h on the beautiful analog display, and effortlessly.

The engine is fun, accelerates fast and has low vibration and noise. The answers allow for smooth play in the city and on the go. On motorways it is possible to travel at a cruising speed of 120 km/h with plenty of gas. The XMAX is the only one in the mid-size category with traction control, it’s hard to feel it working, but on cobblestone or very smooth ground, you can sometimes hear the ignition cut to prevent skidding. As for consumption, shown by the on-board computer on the large digital display, I was able to see between 25 and 30 km/l at 100 km/h, and between 20 and 25 km/l at 120 km/h, an excellent rating for a 250-cylinder engine that carries 180 kg of the weight of the set.

more virtues

The Yamaha XMax ABS impresses with its smooth ride in the city, the suspension absorbs bumps very well and, unlike most scooters, it does not have the unpleasant shaking on the handlebars, nor that bang at the back that comes from the rear shock absorber absorbers of little progress.

The XMAX has a front fork similar to that of motorcycles, with two planks, providing greater firmness to the front group. The XMax’s steering is precise, and it’s fun to turn with, you can lean a lot without worry, and it instills a lot of confidence in the rider.

The XMAX has an ABS-assisted braking system for each disc on both wheels, which helps in emergency braking, it is quite rough, especially on slippery surfaces. Tact is needed, as it acts after a small slip of the rear wheel, which can cause frights. The XMAX’s most technological innovations, most advanced cycling and most current design satisfy from the novice rider to the most experienced.

Mobility is the order of the day, so scooters are on the rise. The practicality of the object holders, the agility in the city and the fuel economy are the factors that please. The 250 to 300 cc mediums are an excellent option for those who already have experience with a smaller scooter and want to move up a category, as they provide superior and very satisfying performance, even for tackling short-distance roads.

Under the saddle the space is quite large and can contain two helmets and some other small objects, there are also two compartments in the fairing, one of which is equipped with a 12 V socket for recharging electronic peripherals and is also closed by the sensor key system presence.

The headlight and taillight are LED but the indicators still use conventional bulbs. The control of the panel is through a button on the right wrist where the start button would be, which is now together with the button to turn off the engine. It is worth mentioning that when the side stand is lowered, the engine is also switched off for safety reasons to avoid falls if an unsuspecting person accelerates the car.

The XMAX is a new design packed with innovative technology solutions to help with handling and increase safety, delivering practicality and enjoyment with great expertise. The price is BRL 30,690 and the colors offered are dull blue, dull green and solid red. The Yamaha XMax ABS also comes with a four-year warranty, the most comprehensive in the market for its category.
