More than 2,500 new devices will be installed in the busiest areas of the capital. The completion period is 3 years
A City Hall of Sao Paulo has started the implementation of the modernization of the traffic light network from the city. In all, 2,586 intelligent traffic lights will be installed at the points of greatest traffic flow, as well as replacing ordinary luminaires in poor condition. The deadline for completion is three years, according to the Public Services Regulatory Agency of the City of São Paulo (SP Regula).
“The forecast is that, by the end of 2023, at least 270 intersections will already be modernized”, informed the Municipality. The exchange of equipment began this semester, in Rua Cardeal Arcoverde and Avenida Doutor Arnaldo, in the west area, where 16 smart traffic lights are already in operation. In addition to these, according to the agency, 111 are under construction and 113 are in the final planning stage. The report of Stadium he also found new equipment on Avenida Pompeia.

How do smart traffic lights work and where will they be installed?
According to the public lighting manager of SP Regula, Mauricio Nastari, who gave an interview to Rádio Eldorado this Monday 21st, the expectation is that the smart traffic lights promote to Better fluidity in city traffic. This is because they have technologies capable of adapting opening hours to vehicle demand and work in a connected way, generating a ripple effect throughout the territory.
If an accident occurs at an intersection, for example, the nearest traffic light will automatically detect the accumulation of cars and slow traffic. Therefore, it will increase the operating time on green light and at nearby intersections, allowing more vehicles to pass.
“In some cases, such as in Avenida Paulista, the traffic lights can regulate the time even on the parallel streets, since people tend to look for them as an alternative,” explains Nastari. “It will be difficult to have the problem of opening one semaphore and then the next one that is already closing,” he adds.
A Traffic Engineering Company (CET) you can also manually make live changes when needed. This management will take place remotely, through a control panel. Therefore, the transit agent will have to personally intervene only in the most serious cases.
According to the city hall, smart traffic lights work with certain minimum and maximum parameters, allowing pedestrians not to be harmed when crossing the streets. They will be installed in the areas of the capital that suffer the most from traffic.
It is also the responsibility of CET to choose the intended locations, as well as pre-programming the equipment to operate in a personalized way, based on the traffic characteristics in each region.
How are the blackout and cable theft problems with the new traffic lights?
According to Nastari, the new traffic lights are still subject to the two biggest problems of this sector in the city of São Paulo: electricity outages and the theft of electrical cables for sale on the illegal copper market.
However, since the traffic light system is integrated with the CET control panel, controllers will automatically be notified of a problem with the device, which could speed up the repair process – from now on, done by the dealer. The manager also says that since it is new equipment, it should have fewer defects than older equipment.
As far as thefts are concerned, Nastari explains that in places with the highest incidence of theft of electric cables, the concessionaire has applied the aluminum wiring, also already used in some public lighting points. “Aluminum is a much cheaper material, so the person tries to steal that cross once and, the second time, when he sees it’s still aluminum, he already gives up,” he says.
