Palmeiras beat Deportivo Pereira 4-0, this Wednesday (23), for the first leg of the Libertadores quarterfinals, and took a huge step towards guaranteeing a place in the semifinals of the competition. Abel Ferreira’s strategy of starting with Artur on the bench and Mayke and Marcos Rocha on the right initially sparked some distrust from some fans, but the plan worked very well and led to the defeat in Colombia.

In a press conference after the duel, Abel explained his tactical adjustments which resulted in an elastic result for Verdão away from home. With the large victory, Alviverde can lose with three goals on Wednesday (30), in the second leg of the quarterfinals. The coach said he would be “massacred” if Palmeiras didn’t get a good result.

– It’s a good question, as a journalist, but I’m a coach and I won’t answer. That’s why I’m a coach. If we had lost they would have said I was wrong, that the coach was stupid. We made these tactical adjustments, I won’t say why. We needed to be aggressive in attack, always have the width in the corridor, which Artur sometimes doesn’t have, and give our team consistency in defense, which we did. I want to congratulate my players. Like I said, it was a tough decision for me, but considering what I saw from our opponent, it was the best decision. If I lost here, they would have slaughtered me – said Abel Ferreira.

The Portuguese also praised his opponent, citing the results obtained by the Colombian team in this edition of the Libertadores. Furthermore, Abel congratulated his players and celebrated the goals scored by Marcos Rocha and Mayke, who played together precisely because of their match strategy.

– I know that we won today and the team that won Boca Juniors here, that had not lost at home, that won the Sudamericana champion, that won the Recopa champion and also had very great illusions of winning today against Palmeiras . We, as a technical staff, as a coach, there are decisions that we have to make. I’m happy for the team, for these two players (Marcos Rocha and Mayke) who scored, curiously I didn’t ask them to score, but to perform other tasks, but what they did was good, it was good for Palmeiras – He Completed.

Before facing Deportivo Pereira again, next week, at the Allianz Parque, Palmeiras will receive Vasco, in its stadium, this Sunday (27), for the 21st round of the Brasileirão. Alviverde is the current vice leader of the national competition with 37 points, 11 behind Botafogo.
