While the Game of Thrones ending has received mixed reactions, there’s no denying that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s work became a pop culture phenomenon and inspired other shows to raise the bar and pursue similar ambitions.
Additionally, the success of Game of Thrones brought David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and allowed them to be among the most prominent screenwriters of the moment. As the HBO phenomenon drew to a close, anticipation was high as to what the duo would do next.
While their next HBO series, Confederate, never got off the ground and the Star Wars movies never saw the light of day, Benioff and Weiss got another very exciting opportunity with the first series of a super deal with Netflix. And in 2020, it was announced that Benioff and Weiss would write and produce The 3-Body Problem for Netflix with Alexander Wu.
Who gave up everything to be in the series
The series will feature an impressive cast including Yovan Adepo, Eiza Gonzalez, Benedict Wong, Jonathan Pryce, Alex Sharp, Jess Hong, as well as Game of Thrones alum Liam Cunningham.
But at one point, Liam Cunningham almost got involved in another project that would have kept him from reuniting with the Game of Thrones showrunners. The only thing that prevented it and secured Cunningham’s inclusion in the Netflix series? Benioff and Weiss themselves.

When it came to participating in the series, the source material was still not a factor for Liam Cunningham. He revealed that he was actually going to be cast in another project, but passed up the opportunity to reunite with Benioff and Weiss, not even knowing what they were working on:
“To be honest, I didn’t tell anyone else about it, I was in serious talks for another project and apparently the guys found out and David and Dan called me and said, “No, don’t do it. Come with us. I didn’t even know what the project was and I just said, “Yeah, OK. I’ll say no to the others. It could have been a day of work on another project, but when these two call you, you come.“
The 3-Body Problem is an eight-part pure sci-fi series based on the book series by Qisin Liu.
