The film Barbie has officially captured the title of top-grossing film of the year in the United States. The Greta Gerwig-directed comedy starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling grossed an impressive $575.4 million at the US box office, surpassing its previous No. Super Mario Bros. Filmwhich had amassed $574 million.
Recently, Barbie also surpassed Christopher Nolan’s epic superhero adventure, Batman the dark knight ($536 million), making it the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history at the U.S. box office.
In the future, the film may even surpass it Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 of 2011 ($1.34 billion) as the studio’s highest-grossing film worldwide in 100 years.
Greta Gerwig, the Oscar-nominated director of Lady Bird AND lovely women, co-wrote the screenplay with his partner Noah Baumbach. The colorful blockbuster follows the famous doll as she leaves the seemingly perfect world of Barbieland to discover the ups and downs of life in the real world. The cast also includes America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu and Michael Cera.
