Without vulgarity and sexual appeal, the style became popular in the 1990s and still reverberates today in artists such as Anitta and Ludmilla.
The singer and composer MC Marcinho, who died on Saturday 26 August of heart complications, became famous in the funk scene for songs such as fascinating, written for princesses, Girl Note 100 AND lonely rap.
All of these songs are part of the style that came to be known as melodic funk, a variant of carioca funk. Born in the United States in the 60s at the hands of black artists like James Brown, authentic funk arrived in Brazil in the following decade. Artists such as Gerson King Combo, Tim Maia, João Donato, Tony Tornado and Marcos Valle began incorporating the genre into their music.
However, in Brazil, in general, what is called funk was based on the rhythm of the Miami Bass, also of American origin, but more related to hip hop. The popularization of the genre here began in the 80s.
Over the years, Brazilian funk has acquired its own characteristics and, initially, two subdivisions: São Paulo funk and Rio funk. The former always gave priority to talking about the lifestyle of its representatives, cars and motorcycles, which later became known as funk ostentação. In Rio de Janeiro, funk has always been more about rhythm and sexual appeal in lyrics.
The funk tune made by MC Marcinho is another subdivision of Brazilian funk. Based on the freestyle, also imported from the United States, the funk tune began to gain ground in the late 80s in Rio de Janeiro.
With romantic lyrics and no sexual appeal, Melody has, as one of its initial milestones, the Prince’s apple tree, by Guilherme Jardim, released in a compilation produced by DJ Marlboro. Other representatives are Latinos, with success bring meand You can dance, with Angel.
In the 90s the duo Claudinho & Buchecha released songs such as Only love, Our dreamQI want to meet you, Conquest AND I’m like this without you. Without the forbidden lyrics, the funk tune invaded radio stations and television programs, such as those presented by Xuxa and Gugu Liberato. Artists such as Adriana Calcanhotto and Paula Toller have re-recorded the hits of Claudinho & Buchecha. MC Marcinho also made the song fascinating inspired by the presenter Xuxa.
Other artists have also used the funk tune to create their own hits or mix it with other genres. Among them are MC Leozinho, Perlla and Naldo Benny. More recently, it can also be found in the songs of Anitta and Ludmilla.
