Russia confirms the death of Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner group

Former mercenary allied with Putin dies in a plane crash

The Russian Investigative Committee announced on Sunday (27) that DNA tests confirmed the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, in an August 23 plane crash.

So far the Russian government has avoided taking for granted the death of Prigozhin, whose name was on the plane’s passenger list.

“Molecular genetic tests have been completed as part of the investigation of the plane crash in the Tver region,” said Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko.

According to him, the results confirmed the identities of the 10 occupants of the plane, who “match” the names on the passenger list.

In addition to Prigozhin, the Embraer plane was carrying Wagner co-founder Dmitry Utkin. The plane crash came about two months after the group threatened a rebellion against Vladimir Putin’s regime, even taking control of the city of Rostov.

However, the uprising was put down a few hours later, and Prigozhin said at the time that his goal was to “protest” the defense ministry, not “topple the country’s government”.

On Friday (25), the Kremlin affirmed that the speculations about an alleged involvement of the regime in the crash of the plane are an “absolute lie”.

Wagner acts on behalf of Russia in several countries of the world, especially in Africa, and also took part in the war in Ukraine. .
