Cláudio, who had to interrupt his training at a young age to work, has not given up on realizing his dream of studying
Retiree Cláudio Jacir dos Reis, 79, became an example of determination and inspiration when he won his long-awaited elementary school diploma through the Education for Youth and Adults (EJA) program offered by the Gravataí City Hall in the state of Rio Great South.
In an interview with Earth, says he promised his children that he would not die without completing his studies. Born in Porto Alegre, Cláudio recalls having to interrupt his education at a young age, when he had to start working and help his mother around the house. With the responsibility of him, the dream of studying has temporarily faded into the background.
“I was not illiterate, I was already in 6th grade. When I reached that grade I had to interrupt my studies because I needed to work to help around the house, because my mother was separated from my father and I had two brothers. But I always wanted to complete the cycle of studies. When I worked, I really wanted to study, but tiredness didn’t help,” he said.
After having worked as a bus driver for more than three decades, the opportunity to resume his studies only presented itself after his retirement, when Cláudio could devote himself entirely to his goal. EJA, a program aimed at young people and adults who wish to complete their studies, became the bridge that brought him back to school. With determination and persistence, he overcame academic and personal challenges to achieve part of his dream.
The graduation ceremony, which took place at the Vânius Abílio dos Santos Municipal School, brought together Cláudio and his 19 classmates. With the proud eyes of family and friends present, Cláudio received his diploma in July of this year, symbolizing his journey of learning and overcoming obstacles.
In the record of this important appointment, he appears laughing next to his Physical Education teacher, Diego. “It was a very happy day, part of a dream come true,” she recalls.
But Cláudio’s educational journey didn’t stop there. To fully fulfill his dream, he is already attending EJA in high school and reports that he is eager to complete this new phase in his quest for knowledge.
“I miss that course, we learned a lot and had very interesting debates. Studying changes people’s lives and gives us more opportunities. Today I’m very happy and I’m also completing the second cycle, which is high school. I’m doing it in Sesi, which I also like, and it’s more of a challenge. But I’m on the right track. And if I succeed, I’ll be healthy when I finish high school, maybe even go to university,” she points out.
