This week, on Netflix, the animated film Baby Boss, signed by the prestigious Dreamworks studios, is in the seventh position of the most watched feature films by French subscribers on the platform (the first place is Christopher Nolan’s Tenet).
In 2017, director Tom McGrath signed, a big name in the Dreamworks studio, to whom we also owe the super villain Megamind, but also and above all the hilarious Madagascar trilogy, Baby Boss is an adaptation of the children’s book of the same name. By Marla Frese.
An original piece that the director was able to capture to make it more relatable to his own experiences and a brotherhood-oriented project: “I was able to make it something very personal. (…) I was the youngest, I was the Baby Boss.”
The film follows the adventures of 7-year-old Tim, who is the center of attention of his parents… until the day they bring home a child. In addition to now monopolizing all the time mom and dad gave him, Tim’s little brother is one of the weirdest newborns around. In fact, when the whole family turns their backs, he puts on a suit, grabs a briefcase, and talks on the phone in a fifty-year-old voice.
It’s actually a spy commissioned by Baby Corp and tasked with the ultimate mission: to ensure that little dogs don’t replace babies in the hearts of adults!
Visually inspired by a very “cartoon” style and in particular by legendary artists of the genre such as Chuck Jones, Tex Avery or Bob Clampett, Baby Boss is one of the most popular films of the Dreamworks studio in France. When it was released in 2017, the Tom McGrath film thus gathered almost 4 million viewers in French cinemas, making it the studio’s 6th biggest success out of 44 films (worldwide, it is only 12th).
After the very good performance of Baby Boss at the box office, various sequels quickly followed: a second feature film called Baby Boss 2: A Family Affair, which is not yet available on Netflix, and two animated series (Baby Boss: Business is Back and Baby Boss: Back to the Cradle), which can be found on the platform, as well as a medium-length Christmas movie.
