The story of Wheel of Time takes place in an epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Women hold the keys to power in this series. We follow the adventures of Maureen (Rosamund Pike), a member of a shadowy organization of powerful women called the Aes Sedai.
As she embarks on a perilous journey around the world with five young men and women, Moraine becomes intrigued by these five individuals, believing that one of them may be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful person who prophesies will save or destroy humanity. The series draws on many elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, including the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.
How does season 1 end?
The opening of the last episode plunges us into the past. We go back 3,000 years to a time when men could be Aes Sedai and flying boats crossed the streets of utopian Tar Valon. For the first time in the series, we get a glimpse of what was lost when the universe was displaced.
We meet Luc Terin Telamon (Alexandre Karim), a previous reincarnated dragon. Here, as the baby sleeps in the background, we witness the division between the women and men of the Aes Sedai. He wants “cage“Dark once and for all.
An Aes Sedai woman thinks her desire is born of pride. The two remain at odds, and as we’ve just learned, her efforts will both dislocate the world and corrupt the male half of said One’s power. Lucius will be one of the first people to be driven to murder and madness by his connection to power.
When we return to the present, we must join the next reincarnated dragon – Rand (Joscha Stradowski) – on a quest that could lead to a similar cataclysm. He and Moiraine are still fighting their way into Blight, which the Aes Sedai describe as “A rot that spreads from the prison of the darkCorpses and extinct kingdoms – the Seven Towers of Malkier, Lan’s (Daniel Hahn) hometown, looming far away, ruined and abandoned – are proof that the Dark One is growing stronger in its exile.
In a nightmare, Randy sees Moiran killed by the figure that has been haunting his dreams since they left Deux Rivières. Now he trades his fiery eyes for a human face to manipulate the dragon. Luz brought 99 soldiers and failed, says the man, who taunts Maureen and taunts Rand, who believes Tammy (Michael McElhatton) is his father. He escapes the nightmare by stabbing himself with a sword, a grotesque but effective awakening.
Randy questions Moraine about her tenuous connection to the One’s power and asks if she can teach him how to use it. She refuses, knowing that madness may very well consume her. Also, once they reach the eye of the world, it will be forced”Embrace the power of one whether you like it or not“.
To prepare her, she gives him the Saangreal, a small totem forged from the power of the One and imbued with the power of ancient channels. When he finally manages to channel it, the Saangreal will multiply his power a hundredfold. He will need this boost if he hopes to crush the forces of the Dark One and drive him deeper into his prison.
In Fal Dara, Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Perrin (Marcus Rutherford), Lan and Nineveh (Zoe Robbins) have to face the unexpected departure of their friends. Coming out of their adventure, Nineveh tells Lan that she was Moiran, not him. She tells him about her methods, which allows her to follow Moraine through Wither. Then they separate.

An army of Trollocs and Pales descends from the wharf, unsuspecting of Randy and Moiran’s approach. Lord Agelmar (Thomas Chaanhing), the leader of Fal Dara, is convinced that this is the end. “It is not our victory– he says about the upcoming battle. The forces of the conquerors are five times greater than those who went before; The best they can do is send messengers to nearby towns to prepare for the arrival of the horde.
Lady Amalisa (Sandra Y Sencindiver) is not so disappointed. “I will not allow our city to be destroyedTraditionally, the men, including Agelmar, work to defend the breach, the passageway that separates the Blight from the city, while the women attack from within the city’s inner walls. Among them, only a handful of women can touch the power of one. Egwene and Ninaeva join Amalisa and two other women, combining their powers to form a powerful opposition.
This is a good thing, as Gap is quickly overwhelmed by Trollocs and Pallids, and Agelmar is on the offensive. As thousands of beasts roam the city, Amalisa drags the other women into a wave of magic that destroys the army. Unfortunately, their collective power is overwhelming. One by one, the women overcome the magic, succumbing to an internal heat that burns their eyeballs and peels their skin.
Nineveh, who has proven to be the brightest in a time of chaos, uses her considerable powers to remove Egwene’s magic and take it upon herself. It also absorbs heat. Egwene mourns, but her tears summon her own powers, which serve to heal and revive Nineveh (who we all knew wasn’t really dead).

Randy and Maureen reach the Eye of the World, a place as cold and damp as it is faded, dark and ugly. It stirs memories in Rand. He remembers visions from 3,000 years ago of the Lue confronting the Dark One. He takes the symbol to heart and – poof – he’s back in Deux Rivières. Green grass, high mountains, cozy cottage. The baby is crying. He is coming. It’s the simple life she’s always wanted, and according to the man in her nightmares, she has the power to make it a reality.
“With this power you can create a world in your image– said the man.whatever you want it to beIt’s tempting, and this vision of her son matches her connection to the power of the One. Streams of magic, both light and dark, swirl around him.
But when he connects with the force, Moiraine is separated from him by the dark. Helplessly, he brings a knife to the throat of an unconscious Rand. “We both know you can’t escape this place without his help.– he said to the emissary of the dark.If he doesn’t pick the light, I’ll pick him.“
Fortunately, it doesn’t come to that, although if it was Randy a few episodes ago, it might not be. What keeps him from succumbing to the Dark One is his love for Egwene, who he admits doesn’t want a simple life like his. This lack of pride and desire is what separates Rand from dragons, whether real (Lucy) or fake (Logain). As Moiraine told the false dragon, it is desire that destroys. Grabbing the Saangreal, he rejects the Dark One, reveals his newfound power, and takes him back to his prison.

Meanwhile, at the castle, Perrin and Loyal (Hamed Animashaun) join forces with high official Fal Dara, who has retreated to the throne room to dig up an ancient artifact buried under the floor. What they found was a cor de valer, which when exploded in it was supposed to summon “the greatest heroes of the picture” to fight on the side of the light.
Alas, an old friend reappears before anyone can get hold of him. Padan Fein (Johan Myers), the wily merchant he met in the first episode, is led to prison by a contingent of knife-wielding Pallids. Fain and the Blafards slaughter Loyal and the others, leaving only Perrin alive.
Fine has a lot to say. Wielding Matt’s cursed dagger, he admits to spying on our heroes for the Dark Ones and helping the Trollocs invade the Two Rivers. He also states that “This is not the end, but the beginning“And if Randy is a dragon,”You all have a role to playHorn in hand, Fain and the Bluffards leave Perrin alone among the dead.
Moiraine also learns that this ending is not what she had hoped for. Randy and he come out victorious, but all is not well. He is still separated from the power of the One, and he feels the tendrils of madness gripping him. Fearing that he will kill those he loves like Luz did, he asks Moraine to tell her friends that he was killed in the fight. He leaves, following Lan who followed them out of town.
Lan joins Moraine as she picks up a shard of stone from the ground, the shard that shattered when Rand defeated the Dark One. We learn that it is a “Quendilar” that is supposed to be nearly indestructible. Although we still don’t know what its true meaning is, Maureen and Lan both seem to understand that its presence means that this was not the last battle. On the contrary, it was the first.
The season ends with a taste of what’s to come. Somewhere on the far west coast there is a fleet of ships full of canals wearing hideous shapes. It’s the Seanchan army, and it looks like they’ve summoned a giant wave with the intention of drowning a small child on the beach. This heralds a very promising season 2.
