Like Disney or Pixar’s animated features, Dreamworks’ films are often peppered with winks, hints, easter eggs, or little hidden details.
Directed by Chris Saunders and Dean W. Blois in the early 2010s, Dragons is perhaps not the most expansive in the field, but nonetheless contains viewers with an explorer’s spirit.
Telling the story of a touching friendship between a young Viking and a wounded dragon as their two peoples wage a centuries-long war, the film leaves its most observant fans with a particularly bleak eye… especially those who grew up watching the Madagascar trilogy (you’ll understand why).
If you hit pause at exactly 57 minutes and 18 seconds into the movie, during the sequence where Hiccup and Astrid follow a strange group of dragons heading for a volcano, you might see a familiar character in an awkward position.
Each of the dragons that make up the pack carries a dead animal as loot for their leader. However, in one of the monster greenhouses, we can make out a thick silhouette of Gloria the hippopotamus, one of the heroes of Madagascar (also produced by Dreamworks Studio).
Of course, at first glance, one would have the right to strongly doubt the veracity of this Easter egg. After all, the dragon crosses the screen in less than a second, and the shape of the supposed Gloria is not so clear. Not to mention, it’s hard to accept this sad fate for a hippopotamus.
However, it really is! Indeed, the two directors of the film have confirmed it themselves in the audio commentary, which leaves no doubt.
But this rather nasty cameo isn’t the only detail that appears in Dragons. Don’t worry, other much funnier references are also part of the film.
