Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, recently admitted that some of the medical series’ most iconic deaths left her “horrified” when rewatching the episodes
Over 22 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy became known for its impactful deaths and moments that marked generations of fans. But not even the creator of the series herself, Shonda Rhimesescaped the emotional impact. Recently, she confessed that some character deaths traumatized her when she rewatched old episodes.
In a podcast interview Call Her Daddythe Golden Globe winner described that the scenes, previously just part of the story, were now “horrible” and almost unbearable to watch, revealing the worst: the deaths of Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). Rhimes admitted that, when reviewing the episodes, she was impressed by the intensity of the scenes:
“I recently went back and started watching select snippets of some episodes. When I rewatched that episode, I was horrified. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this looks like a real snuff movie’. Like, what the hell happened?”
The scenes in question take place at the end of the eighth season, in the episode flightwhich shows a plane crash involving six doctors. The tragedy results in Lexie’s death and leaves Mark devastated. The character of Eric Dane dies in the next episode, Going, Going, Goneat the beginning of the ninth season.
It may seem absurd for the creator herself to be surprised, but Rhimes justified: “During the time I’m writing, I’m inside the story. I always think that my job is to be a guardian of the story, not the actors, the series or the fans. My job is to be faithful to the narrative,” she said.
