At least seven worshipers were killed in an attack by a gang of armed men on a mosque in Kaduna state in northwest Nigeria, police said on Saturday.
The attack, in the remote village of Saya, in Ikara local government, occurred on Friday evening as worshipers gathered to pray, Kaduna police spokesman Mansur Haruna said by telephone.
Two other people were injured in the attack and were taken to hospital for treatment, Haruna said.
A resident of the village, Haruna Ismail, told Reuters by telephone: “Five people were killed inside the mosque while they were praying and two more inside the village community.”
Gangs of heavily armed men have wreaked havoc in northwest Nigeria over the past three years, kidnapping thousands, killing hundreds and threatening road traffic or land cultivation in some areas.
The attacks are stalling Nigeria’s security forces, who are battling a 14-year Islamic insurgency in the northeast, violent sectarian clashes between farmers and herders in the central region, and increasingly frequent attacks by a group separatist in the southeast.
