Francis was the first pope to visit the Asian country
Pope Francis concluded his apostolic journey to Mongolia on Monday (4), which received a pontiff for the first time in its history.
The purpose of the visit was to try to expand the presence of Catholicism in Asia, especially in one of the countries with one of the lowest concentrations of Christians in the world – about 50 thousand, compared to a population of over 3 million people.
On his last day in Mongolia, the Pope had just one meeting with former president Nambar Enkhbayar and inaugurated a charity center run by the Catholic Church in Ulan Bator.
“The true progress of nations is not measured in economic wealth and even less in how much they invest in the illusory power of weapons, but in the ability to offer people health, education and integral growth”, Francis said in the “Casa dei Misericordia”.
The site will provide temporary shelter to the poor and medical assistance to people in need. “I really like the name Casa della Misericordia. These two words contain the definition of the Church, called to be a welcoming home where everyone can experience a superior love,” the Pope added.
Francis will arrive in Rome this Monday and is already planning another trip, on September 22 and 23, to Marseilles, France, to attend a meeting on the Mediterranean Sea, the scene of many migrant tragedies in recent years. .
