The works of the speaker, who had to stop talking about football after a car accident in 1994, will be on sale from 21 to 30 September; he is always remembered in the sports stories of his brother Oscar Ulisse
The Gustavo Rosa Institute (IGR) will host an exhibition of works by Osmar Santos, former sports announcer and owner of unforgettable catchphrases in football. The exhibition will take place from 21 to 30 September and will exclusively feature paintings by the “father of matter”, a nickname by which he was also known in the world of sport. Osmar became involved with the screen after his car accident in 1994. The accident left him with speech and body movements that prevented him from continuing his career as a storyteller. Since then, he has been demanding the attention of family members.
“He found himself in painting,” says Oscar Ulisses, Osmar’s brother and storyteller like him who has worked on Rádio Globo, Rádio Bandeirantes and, currently, on CBN. “What started out as a therapy, to have a channel of communication with the world, has turned into a way to connect with his life,” he adds. In his sports stories, Oscar always mentions his brother, whom he calls his “eternal boss”.
The opening of the exhibition will be attended by Osmar Santos, 74, and will take place from Monday to Friday, always from 10 to 18, and on Saturday, from 10 to 14. On the opening date of the exhibition, the 21st, it is a cocktail for guests and the press from 18.00 to 22.00. Osmar will receive his guests, friends who have accompanied him in his career and family members. Even after the accident, Osmar Santos never stopped smiling innocent and passionate. He moves in an adapted wheelchair.
The Gustavo Rosa Institute is located on Rua Veneza, in the Jardim Paulista neighborhood, in the city of São Paulo. During the show, 12 paintings by the announcer will be exhibited and put up for sale, each of which will be sold for approximately R$ 3,500.00. “We are a cultural institution whose purpose is not only to preserve the collection left by Gustavo Rosa, but also to illuminate the cultural life of the city. Osmar deserves all our respect and support”, underlines Roberto Rosa, brother of Gustavo and president of the IGR .
Gustavo Machado Rosa was a painter, draftsman, printmaker and visual artist. Self-taught, he was born on December 20, 1946 in the city of São Paulo. He started painting in his childhood. His works are “Brazilian and universal” and convey the ironic and poetic reality of painted objects. They don’t need subtitles. They indicate the artist’s attitude to life. Much to do with the work of Osmar Santos.
For the eternal herald, the painting reflects a search for overcoming. “In each of his paintings there is a reflection of his struggle for survival and to make life less heavy than it was becoming after the accident., Says Oscar Ulisses.
Due to the consequences caused by the car accident, Osmar lost the movement of the right side of his body and, therefore, paints only with his left hand. His paintings are made with a technique that mixes the use of acrylic paint with oil paint, learned from Professor Rubens Matuck. He has been accompanying and teaching Osmar for over 15 years and says that the former television host is “one of the main students of his life”.
Osmar worked as a narrator at the Jovem Pan, Record and Globo radio stations. During his career he has also collaborated with the televisions Record, Manchete and Globo. When it moved to Rádio Record, in 1988, the station carried an advertisement in Estadão that made clear Osmar Santos’ appeal among listeners, calling the announcer “the champion of the audience” and “the favorite and most listened to among all fans”. .
He became known as one of the most important voices in Brazilian football, with slogans that went down in history. Among them are “Why did you stop, why did you stop, kid?”; “Eee queee goooollll”, with the vowels lengthened to tell when the ball inflated the net; and the classic “Ripa na chulipa e pimba na Gorduchinha”. His companions at the time were storytelling heavyweights, such as Fiori Gigliotti and José Silvério, to name but two.
There was even an attempt to give the official name of the ball from the 2014 World Cup, played in Brazil, to the affectionate nickname with which Osmar called the ball: Gorduchinha. The campaign had the support of prominent figures in the country – such as former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso and former presenter Jô Soares – but adidas did not heed the popular appeal. In 2014 it was Penalty’s turn to create the balloon with the name in honor of the presenter. That season it was used in the Série B do Brasileiro and in some state leagues, such as Mineiro and Gaúcho.
One of the most striking moments of the narrator’s career, however, has nothing to do with sports. In 1984 he participated and presented demonstrations during the “Diretas Já” movement, which demanded the return of direct voting for the presidency of the Republic after twenty years of military dictatorship, and became known as “the herald of Diretas”. “Osmar was considered a kind of symbol of all this. He was present at all the events and gave the presentation in a very well done way. This was a special moment in his career”, recalls his brother.

Osmar has also collected stories of extraordinary games that took place during the time he was acting on the microphones. He was the voice of the semifinal of the 1976 Brazilian championship, between Fluminense and Corinthians, a match that in Rio was called ‘Invasão Corintiana’ and ended a drought that lasted more than 22 years without titles for the club.
He also recounted Palmeiras’ conquest of the Campeonato Paulista in 1993, the team’s first after 16 years without trophies, and São Paulo’s world title in 1992, against Barcelona. There have been six World Cups with Osmar’s voice on the radio and TV. He narrated the 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994 tournaments. Osmar Santos’ last Cup was when the Brazilian team won its fourth world title, the fourth for the USA, in 1994.
