Center forward Boriša Simanić, of the Serbian basketball team, had to be operated on for the removal of a kidney after incurring an elbow in the match against South Sudan, valid for the World Cup and played on Wednesday (30). The procedure was carried out on Sunday (3), as communicated by the Serbian Basketball Federation.

The 25-year-old athlete underwent surgery on Wednesday in Manila, Philippines. However, a few days later he had to have his kidney removed due to post-operative complications. According to Dragan Radovanovic, team doctor, the player had “alterations in the vitality of the kidney tissue”. Evidently Simanić will not play again in the tournament.

During the match against South Sudan, the centre-forward was hit in the stomach by Nuni Omot and immediately fell to the ground. The African athlete claimed the move was accidental and apologized to his opponent after the match.

Serbia has played five matches at the World Cup and won four, the only defeat being against Italy. Simanić’s side are in the quarter-finals of the competition and will face Lithuania on Tuesday (5). In addition to qualifying for the semi-finals, the match could guarantee the Serbs a place at the Paris Olympics.
