The football world is in mourning. Malian footballer Salif Keita, who played for AS Saint-Etienne and Olympique de Marseille, died on Saturday 2 September in Bamako at the age of 76. The centre-forward’s life inspired the feature film Le Ballon d’Or, which was released in cinemas in 1994.
Directed by “Ballon d’Or” Cheik Doukure, Salif Keita plays Karim’s character, the coach of little Bandian, a future soccer star. The small athlete was also a technical advisor on this film, in which the actress Agnes Sorali is especially famous.
The first African Ballon d’Or in 1970, Salif Keita was an icon at Saint-Etienne, where he was nicknamed “The Black Panther”. During his time with the Greens between 1967 and 1972, he scored 140 goals in 185 games, winning three French League titles and two French Cups. Salif Keita also wore the shirt of the Mali national team thirteen times.
