Priscilla: Early reviews call the film a ‘pleasantly emotional experience’; read

Directed by Sophia Copolla, Priscilla should premiere on December 26 in Brazilian theaters

One of the most anticipated films of 2023, Priscilla first aired on Venice Film Festival 2023 and the first reviews have already been released. Based on the book elvis and me (1985), the feature was highly praised and was even described as a “pleasantly emotional experience.”

Second Owen Gleibermancritic of Variety, the production is “a piercingly honest drama” with “meticulous docudrama authenticity.” “The film of Coppola is simply called Priscillaand that brings us to something essential: that the film, while it can be described as a love story, will not be told from a dual point of view,” he said.

Gleiberman also praised the work of Cailee Spaenyinterpreter of Priscilla Presley: “[Ela] she has an avid eye and a keen wit, and makes a point of playing teenage Priscilla as a typical American girl of her time, courteous and decorous, yet with a taste for adventure. After all, she is living in the world after Elvis Presley remade it!”

Furthermore, David Rooneyof The Hollywood Reporter, spared no praise. “[O filme] elegantly updates a key player in the legend of elvis outside, and anyone attuned to the distinct wavelengths of Coppola will find it a delightfully emotional experience,” he opined.

[Jacob Elordi, intérprete de Elvis Presley] finds its own way into the character, pouring seductive charm and undeniable magnetism into the sad eyes and sleepy speech patterns. But he never shies away from the more off-putting traits – the tantrums, petulance, avoidance and dishonesty.

Already Stephanie Bunburyof deadlinepunctuated the work of the director, Sophia Coppolawho “has done his best to observe the workings of fame, wealth and excess, not trying to skewer or accuse anyone, but simply recording what he sees. The strength of his films is that he seems to see everything.”

The journalist also commented how the film is “a damning vision of a man and – eventually – of a marriage … most people know the skeleton of the story of presley. Told from his ex-wife’s point of view, however, the story becomes completely different.”
