Warning, the following paragraph contains spoilers for the Netflix series as well as the One Piece manga that follows Season 1.
Have you read the manga and seen the anime? So you already know the answer to this question. But not the uninitiated who discovered the incredible world of One Piece thanks to Netflix’s live-action adaptation.
The screenwriters took some liberties in adapting Eiichiro Oda’s work and did not follow the narrative framework faithfully. Like Zoro’s (McEnu) intro scene on the island of Sixis, which is not featured at all in the manga or anime, it’s just suggested. During this passage, the swordsman meets (literally) a certain Mr. 7. The latter pretends to be a member of Baroque Works and hopes that the pirate hunter will join their ranks.
This organization, which Zoro believes to be a clan of assassins, is actually only featured in the second manga saga, which is called Alabasta. It’s even in the middle of the story, as Luffy and his crew are called upon to defend the country during a civil war, precisely because of Baroque’s artwork, which operates in the shadows.
If you want to know more about this criminal organization, I invite you to read the next paragraph, otherwise, go on your way.
The first big challenge for the Straw Hat crew
The Straw Hat Crew meets two members of Baroque Works as they reach the Grand Line, the ocean that separates the four seas and on which One Piece will be located.
If it includes more than 2000 members, this organization has a fairly precise organizational chart, with 9 lieutenants in numbers (like Mr. 7). Each lieutenant is accompanied by a partner whose name begins with “Miss”. These agents have special powers (especially as we move up the organizational chart) and are mostly possessed by Devil Fruits – like Luffy.
The man at the head of the Baroque works is called the Crocodile and is one of the 7 Grand Corsairs. These super-powered pirates—including Mihawk—have signed a pact with the World Government and are therefore officially working for them (but unofficially, that’s something else).
Crocodile is the main villain of the Alabasta arc in One Piece and a powerful enemy of Luffy. If there is a second season, the Baroque Works would logically be at the center of the story, as would their big boss. Therefore, the writers chose to tease their presence, both for the fans and to raise expectations around this organization, which marks the arrival of a very important character in the One Piece universe (but we won’t tell you anymore!).
